By defeating Haguroyama, "yokozuna" and captain of the East team, Maedayama, "ozeki," won the individual championship in the 1944 autumn main sumo tourney, which ended on November 21, at the Korakuen stadium, Tokyo, after a 10 day series.
    Maedayama finished his scheduled 10 matches with nine wins and one loss.
    In the inter-team competition, the West team overwhelmed the East team by the total score of 123 points to 88.
