Sumo Tourney Opens

Nayoroiwa And Maedayama Bow In Big Upsets On 1st Day

    Two upsets marked the opening day of the spring main sumo tourney, January 9, at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, when Nayoroiwa and Maedayama, both "ozeki" of the West team, were defeated by Kiyomigawa and Dewaminato respectively.
    Save for the two "ozeki" grapplers, the high ranking wrestlers, including Haguroyama, Futabayama and Terukuni, all "yokozuna," won their respective matches. On the first day, the West team outpointed the East team 17 to 6 in the inter-team competition.

The results of the other leading matches on the opening day were:

Haguroyama Downed

    Haguroyama, "yokozuna" and vice-captain of the West team, went down in defeat before the hands of Bishuyama, while the two "ozeki" wrestlers of the same team were again defeated on the second day of the spring main sumo tourney, January 10, at the Kokugikan, Tokyo.
    By outpointing the West team 13 to 11 on that day, the East team narrowed the West's lead to nine points, the total score since the first day being 28 points to 19.
