New Sumo Rankings
Announcement Is Made For Spring Main Tourney Starting Jan. 9
The Dai Nippon Sumo Association on January 4 announced
the new rankings for its spring main sumo tourney, which will be held for
15 days beginning January 9 at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo.
By virtue of its victory in the inter-team competition
in the last main tourney held in May, 1943, the former West team was made
the East team, while the former East team was consequently demoted to the
West side.
Prominent among those elevated in the new East team
were Futasegawa, who was promoted from the position of "komusubi" to "sekiwake",
and Masuiyama, who was given the position of "komusubi" by advancing three
ranks.
In the new West team, Terunobori, was elevated from
the position of "komusubi" to "sekiwake" in place of Saganohana, who dropped
to the rank of "komusubi", while Azumafuji advanced seven ranks to the
first position in the "maegashira" class.
