New Sumo Lineup

Terukuni Full 'Yokozuna'; Summer Tourney Will Begin May 9

Heralding the summer main tournament of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association, which begins on May 9 to last for 15 days, the new "banzuke" or the lineups of sumo wrestlers were announced by the association on May 3, two days earlier than usual.
In the new "banzuke," the former West team, headed by Futabayama, was made the East team by virtue of its triumph over the former East team in the last tourney, while the former East team was consequently demoted to the West side.
Prominent among the shifts in the positions of wrestlers is the promotion of Terukuni, "yokozuna"- elect to full "yokozuna" in the new West team in place of Akinoumi, who dropped from full-"yokozuna" to "yokozuna"-elect.
Other wrestlers promoted include Toyoshima and Sagamigawa, who rose to full "sekiwake" and "sekiwake"-elect, respectively, of the West team.
Leading wrestlers in the new "banzuke" are:
