    Grand Champion Akinoumi, leader of the East Camp suffered his first defeat in eight starts on Sunday when Kashiwado, in a whirlwind attack, sent his giant adversary flying out of the ring. Shown is Akinoumi, at right, going into a tailspin.



Champ Akinoumi Loses In Feature Upset.

    Some 30,000 fans, who packed the Kokugikan amphitheater on Sunday, the eighth day of the spring tournament, witnessed the first big upset of the 15-day tournament as Kashiwado of the West team toppled famed Akinoumi, one of four Grand Champions or "Yokozuna" of this tournament.
    Akinoumi's defeat was the only upset of the day, as favourites continued to take their bouts. At the end of the eighth day, the West team led the East team, 94 to 87.
