Sumo Tourney Opens

Premier, Finance Minister Among Spectators

The photo shows Premier Tojo and his two daughters and Finance Minister Kaya.


    All of the four "yokozuna" grapplers and two "ozeki" grapplers won their respective matches with ease on the opening day of the 15 day spring main sumo tourney of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, on January 10.
    After the ceremony of returning the trophy by futabayama, individual champion in the last tourney, General Taka Hishikari, president of the Dai Nippon Churei Kensho Kai (Society To Honor The War Dead), gave an address on behalf of the society, in response the association's decision to contribute the day's proceeds toward the fund of the society.
    Premier Tojo, accompanied by his two daughters, appeared at the arena amid the welcome of all the spectators and earnestly watched the hotly fought bouts. Finance Minister Kaya was also among the spectators.
    The wounded servicemen recuperating in the hospital of the Army medical school were specially invited by the Tokyo branch of the Military Welfare Society and the Mainichi Shimbun, through the courtesy of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association, as the first group of war wounded to be invited during the 15 days.
    The East team led the West team by 13 points to 10 in the senior groups' team competition at the end of the first day.

    Adding three more points on the second day of the spring main sumo tourney, the East team took a 26 to 20 lead over the West team on January 11 at the Kokugikan, Tokyo.
