New Sumo Rankings Announced Tuesday

Saganohana Is Elevated To 'Sekiwake'; Sagamigawa Made 'Komusubi'

    The new rankings made ready for the spring main tourney of the Dai Nippon Professional Sumo Association, which will be held for 15 days beginning January 10 at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, were announced by the association on January 5.
    As the result of its team victory in the last main tourney of May, 1942, the West team was made the East team.
    Outstanding among those elevated in the new East team was Sagamigawa who was given the position of "komusubi" by advancing four ranks. Akinoumi, Terukuni, Dewaminato, and Toyoshima remained in their respective ranks.
    In the new West team, Saganohana, "komusubi," and Futasegawa, "maegashira," were elevated to the positions of "sekiwake" and "komusubi," respectively. Meanwhile Tamanoumi dropped two ranks to the "maegashira" class. There was no change in the positions of such high ranking grapplers at Futabayama, Haguroyama, Maedayama and Nayoroiwa.
    The high ranking grapplers in the new groupings are:
