Akinoumi, Terukuni Are Made 'Yokozuna'

Nayoroiwa Is Also Promoted To Rank Of 'Ozeki" On Merit

The Dai Nippon Sumo Association at the post tourney meeting of its officials for the compilation of new rankings held on May 25 formerly recommended Akinoumi and Terukuni, both holding the rank of "ozeki" of the West team, as "yokozuna," the highest rank in sumodom, in view of their good showings in the past several tourneys, especially in the last tourney.
The officials also decided to elevate Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake" of the East team, to the rank of "ozeki."
Akinoumi will be the 37th "yokozuna" grappler and Terukuni the 38th wrestler holding the title.

Futabayama Wins

Secures 10th Individual Title By Defeating Akinoumi In Hot Bout

Futabayama, "yokozuna," captain of the East team, won his 10th individual title in the official tourney of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association when he defeated Akinoumi, fighting "ozeki" and captain of the West team, after a grueling bout on the last day of the 1942 summer tourney on May 24.
Futabayama thus set a new record in the number of individual titles won since the adoption of the current system of hoisting the champion's portrait in the Kokugikan, the former record being nine times tied among Tachiyama, Tochigiyama, and himself.
Futabayama and Akinoumi finished the tourney with 13 wins and two defeats, but the former won the title as he ranked higher than Akinoumi.
Terukuni, another "ozeki" of the West team, also finished with 13 wins and two defeats. He defeated Maedayama in an all-ozeki match on the last day. Maedayama thus tasted his fourth defeat in the summer tourney.
Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake," and Saganohana, "komusubi," and both of the East team, finished with 11 wins and four defeats each.
In the team competition in the senior camps, the West team defeated the East team 202 points to 163.
