Akinoumi Toppled

Winning Streak Broken By Maedayama; Futaba Again Undefeated

    Akinoumi, "ozeki" and hitherto the sole undefeated grappler, was finally downed by Maedayama, veteran "ozeki," on the 14th day of the current main sumo tourney, May 23, at the Kokugikan before a capacity crowd.
    The fans who packed the bowl again went wild as Terukuni, promising "ozeki," toppled Futabayama, "yokozuna," in their first official bout.
    The West team increased its lead over the East team to 36 points, 189 to 153, the day's score being 14 to 10.
    The main summer sumo tourney which has been going on since May 10 will be brought to an end on Sunday, after a 15 day series.
    With the honors having already been taken by the West team, the attention of the tourney is centered on the individual showings, especially on who will come out the victor in the Futabayama-Akinoumi bout on Sunday.
    The winner of this match will be the individual champion in the current tourney.
