Sumo Tourney Opens With Big Upset Bout

Yokozuna Haguroyama Loses Match To Kyushuzan On 1st Day

A big upset marked the opening day of the main summer tourney of the Dai Nippon Professional Sumo Association, May 10, at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, when mighty "yokozuna" Haguroyama went down in defeat before tricky Kyushuzan.
Save for this upset, all favorites won their respective bouts.
The third and fourth floors of the bowl were packed to capacity long before the gates were opened at 8 a.m., most of the seats having been offered at the uniform admission fee of 55 sen.
Included among the distinguished spectators were Premier General Tojo, who, together with Finance Minister Kaya, earnestly watched the hotly contested bouts.
The proceeds on the first day will go to the Dai Nippon Churei Kensho Kai as a fund for the construction of war monuments.
