Sumo Tourney Opens With Big Upset Bout
Yokozuna Haguroyama Loses Match To Kyushuzan On 1st Day
A big upset marked the opening day of the main summer
tourney of the Dai Nippon Professional Sumo Association, May 10, at the
Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, when mighty "yokozuna" Haguroyama went down
in defeat before tricky Kyushuzan.
Save for this upset, all favorites won their respective
bouts.
The third and fourth floors of the bowl were packed
to capacity long before the gates were opened at 8 a.m., most of the seats
having been offered at the uniform admission fee of 55 sen.
Included among the distinguished spectators were
Premier General Tojo, who, together with Finance Minister Kaya, earnestly
watched the hotly contested bouts.
The proceeds on the first day will go to the Dai
Nippon Churei Kensho Kai as a fund for the construction of war monuments.
