Pleased With New Sumo Rankings
Beaming with smiles over the new rankings announced
at 8 a.m., Tuesday for the “summer” season of the professional sumo (wrestling)
tournament which gets under way May 10 at the Kokugikan bowl at Ryogoku
for fifteen days are Ohnomori (left) and Terukuni. Officials of the Japan
Sumo Association made one of the most radical decisions in years when they
shifted Terukuni, ohzeki (champion) still in his early twenties, from the
East to the West camp to fill the gap left by the retirement of Minanogawa,
Yokozuna (grand champion). Ohonomori, who belongs to the same stable with
Terukuni, is looking at the rankings with big grin because he has been
newly promoted into the makunouchi (champion) circle.
