Summer Sumo Meet To Commence May 10 At Ryogoku Stadium
The annual summer sumo tournament will be held
at the Kokugikan Amphitheater in Ryogoku, Honjo for 15 days starting May
10, it was announced March 21 by the Japan Sumo association, according
to Domei. The official ranking of the wrestlers for the Summer Tournament
will be announced on May 5, on the occasion of the Tanno-no-sekku, of Boy’s
Festival. The ceremony of purifying the Dohyo or wrestling arena will be
solemnized in the amphitheater on May 9. This will be followed by a tradition
Japanese custom of “furedaiko” or beating drums about the city streets
announcing the opening of the summer sumo season.
