Spring Sumo Tourney Opens At Kokugikan

Maeda, Terukuni Downed In Biggest Upsets On 1st day

    The spring main tourney of the Japan Professional Sumo Association, the fifth tourney since the restoration of the East vs. West inter-team system, was opened on Sunday, January 11, at the Kokugikan, Tokyo.
    At 3 p.m., Premier General Hideki Tojo, together with Finance Minister Okinori Kaya, visited the Kokugikan.
    In the big upset, Maedayama, "ozeki," vice-captain of the West team, and Terukuni, new "ozeki," hope of the East team, were defeated by Tsurugamine and Sagamigawa, both "maegashira."
    Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake," one of the powerful Tatsunami trio, also went down in defeat before Tominishiki in another upset, as in the main summer tourney held last year.
    At the end of the first day, the West team led by two points, 13 to 11, in the senior East vs. West inter-team matches.

2nd Day Results

    Adding one more point on the second day of the spring main sumo tourney, the West team took a 28 to 25 lead over the East team in the senior inter-team matches on January 12 at the Kokugikan, Tokyo.
