SPRING SUMO MEET OPENS AT RYOGOKU

Premier Tojo Attends First Day – All Champions Easily Down Opponents

The East camp forged ahead of the West aggregation after a full day of hard matches Monday in the second of sumo tournament now being staged at the Kokugikan amphitheater in Ryogoku. The East team is leading by 25 to 23.
Once again the amphitheater was filled to capacity as the wrestlers went into action from dawn and continued till early afternoon. No upsets took place and the Champions, Futabayama, Haguroyama and Minanogawa conquered their opponents.
On Sunday the opening day of the tournament, the bouts were staged in a strained but high spirited atmosphere well befitting the emergency time. Many of the leading Sumo wardens were clad in national uniforms to assist the over-flowing crowds.
Premier Hideki Tojo visited the amphitheater at 1 pm and left in a few hours after the bout between the new Grand Champion or “Yokozuna” Haguroyama and Shintozan ended in the former’s clean victory. Also seen among the crowd were many National school children, the guests of the Wrestling Association.
There were no remarkable surprises among the results of the day’s matches although, Terukuni, a new “Ozeki” or second ranking in the list of the first wrestlers was downed rather easily by Sagamigawa of much inferior ranking. The two other Grand Champions, Futabayama and Minanogawa, easily defeated their opponents.
The bouts came to a close at 4:30 pm, which is a new record for the early closing of the bowl.
