Haguroyama Scores Another Sumo Win

Akinoumi Again Defeated:  West Forges Ahead to Take Lead

Like a lone morning star, Haguroyama, “ozeki” of the West team, the only grappler keeping his winning streak intact, added to his brilliance on the 9th day of the current sumo tournament on Saturday, May 17, by defeating Kasagiyama, “komusubi” of the East team, known for his smart strategy.
In contrast to the growing hope of Haguroyama for “yokozuna” laurels, Akinoumi, “ozeki” of the East team, whose clean slate had been spoilt on the previous day by Futasegawa, tasted another defeat at the hands of Komatsuyama, third-ranking “maegashira” of the West team, in no less an upset than the preceding day’s.
Futabayama, “yokozuna” of the West team, easily forced Kyushuzan out of the arena, making his score 8 wins and 1 loss.
The day was a red-letter day for the whole West team as well, for it led the East team for the first time in the present series, making the score to date 121 to 117 in its favor.
The 9th day’s score was 15 for the West and 11 for the East.
