FUTABAYAMA DOWNED;  AKINOUMI ALSO LOSES

Big Upsets Mark 8th Day; Haguroyama Alone Has No Black Balls

It was calm outside, but a storm raged twice inside the Kokugikan amphitheater as Futabayama – considered impregnable – went down in defeat before Sakuranishiki,  a “maegashira” of the Dewanoumi Club, in the biggest upset so far, and Akinoumi, “ozeki” and the hope of the East team, was pulled out of the ring by Futasegawa on the eighth day of the current main tourney on May 16.
Futabayama, captain of the West team, and Akinoumi, virtually chieftain of the East team, thus suffered their respective first defeats.
It was also a jinx day for Maedayama and Itsutsushima, both holding the rank of “ozeki” and on the East team, each suffering his second defeat. Maedayama lost to Tamanoumi, while Itsutsushima to Saganohana.
Haguroyama, “ozeki” of the West team, is now the only grappler who maintains a clean record.
The scores were tied at 106 points each, the West team counting 15 points against 1? By the East team on the eighth day.
