FUTABAYAMA LOSES IN BIG SUMO UPSET
Sakuranishiki Provides Surprise - Akinoumi Falls Victim to Futasegawa's Skill
Two sumo champions, so far victorious in the
present tournament, proved failures at the Kokugikan Sumo bowl, Ryogoku,
Friday afternoon, in what proved to be the most astounding features of
the eighth day bouts. Futabayama, the Grand Champion of the west camp,
was defeated by Sakuranishiki, a fourth ranking champion of the east camp,
and Akinoumi, an Ozeki or second ranking expert of the east camp was downed
by Futasegawa, a fourth ranking Sumo of the west camp.
Sakuranishiki was the first to launch attack upon
his formidable opponent Futabayama, which the latter accepted in an easy
way. Then Sakuranishiki swiftly turned to the left side of the Grand Champion,
kicking the latter's right leg at the same time. Futabayama seemed a little
surprised at the kicking, which the shrewd opponent did not fail to observe.
Sakuranishiki lost no time in giving the Grand Champion a good stroke on
the back with the result that Futabayama went down on all fours.
Akinoumi at first pushed away Futasegawa with both
hands, attacking his opponent's throat fiercely. Futasegawa met the attacks
well and presently the two were seen in the center of the ring pushing
each other. Gradually, Akinoumi was pushed to the edge of the ring and
at the last moment Futasegawa dislodged his mighty opponent out of the
ring.
With Friday's results, the scores of the east and
west camps became tied, with the west camp recovering its three losses
on the previous day. The bouts came to a close at 6.33 p.m.
