Kasagiyama Lectures Before Waseda Students

A peculiar lecture meeting took place at the Okuma Memorial Hall in the Waseda University campus last Wednesday when Kasagiyama, one of the intelligent and promising "sumo" wrestlers, spoke on the spirit of sumo art under the auspices of the same university's dramatic museum. Kasagiyama is a graduate of Waseda, the fact which is especially responsible for the wider circle of his followers among university students.
Reviewing the historical development of sumo since its first introduction many centuries ago, the wrestler compared the spirit embodied in the sumo art with that of "Bushido" - Nippon's typical chivalry.
Sumo is traced, he went on, to the spirit of "Bushido" for its foundation and furthermore is provided with the technique of modern sports. It is not solely an art which is only observed by spectators as many people think, he asserted, but an art with which one promotes his mental and physical development.
