Diplomats See Nippon's National Sport

    Members of the diplomatic corps, foreign correspondents, and others in Tokyo were invited by the Board of Information to the kokugikan arena at Ryogoku, Tokyo, when the summer main tourney of the Japan Professional Sumo Association opened on Friday, May 9.
    Among those invited were: General Ambassador Maj.-General Eugene Ott, British Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie, American Ambassador Joseph Clark Grew, Chinese Ambassador Chu Min-yi, and T.H. Prince and Princess Vanvaidyakara and Their Highnesses' little daughter.

Big Tournament Started; Upsets Mark Bouts On 1st Day

    Drawing the attention of millions of fans of the nation's oldest sport, the summer main sumo tourney, the fourth tourney since the restoration of the East vs. West  inter-team system, was opened on May 9 at the Kokugikan amphitheater, Tokyo.
    Included among the capacity fans were many foreigners who earnestly watched the hotly contested matches.
    Because of the enthusiastic fans who began flocking to the Kokugikan from early on the morning of January 8, the doors were opened for them at 2.40 p.m. on that day, two hours earlier than in the last tourney in January.
    Kasagiyama, "komusubi" in the East team, was defeated by fighting Komatsuyama in an upset.
    In another upset, Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake" in the West team and one of the powerful Tatsunami trio, went down in defeat before Tominishiki.
