Futaba Is Champion As Sumo Meet Ends

East Wins Team Honors; Haguroyama Also Scintillates

    Futabayama, "yokozuna" and captain of the West team, won the honor of being the individual champion in the spring main sumo tourney which wound up on January 24 after a 15 day series of matches at the Kokugikan, Tokyo. He won 14 out of 15 matches in the current series, losing only to Maedayama. This was the eighth individual pennant victory for Futabayama.
    The East won the team honors, scoring 177 points against the West's 162. On the last  and 15th day, the two teams tied at 11 points each.
    Haguroyama also finished with 14 wins and one defeat, but Futabayama become the individual champion as he ranked higher than Haguroyama.
    The time honored "yumitori" ceremony took place immediately after the concluding match between Futabayama and Minanogawa, being performed by Haraigawa.
    The closing ceremony then took place, beginning with the singing in unison of the national anthem, followed by a bow toward the Imperial Palace, a silent prayer for the repose of the spirits of the war dead and for success of the Imperial forces on the China front.
    The coveted championship cup was next awarded to Futabayama.
    Three cheers were raised for His Majesty the Emperor, led by Admiral Isamu Takeshia, president of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association.
    Presentation of prizes to deserving wrestlers then took place.
