EASTERN CAMP TAKES SPRING TOURNEY

Grand Champion Futabayama Retains Title by Vanquishing Minanogawa

By a considerable margin, 177 to 162 points, the east camp won the spring professional wrestling tourney at the Kokugikan Amphitheater at Ryogoku yesterday when the last day's bouts were fought before more that 21,000 rabid fans, says the Nichi Nichi.
Grand Champion Futabayama of the west camp emerged, as expected, the strongest rikishi of the tourney yesterday when he easily defeated Grand Champion Minanogawa of the east. Except for a setback by Champion Maedayama of the west, Futabayama won all the other 14 bouts.
Champion Maedayama was beaten by the stout Terukuni and Champion Akinoumi by Champion Haguroyama.

Sumo Champion Minanogawa to Wrestle
With Current Events by Going to Waseda (Evening Edition Page 4)

Minanogawa, the grand champion sumo wrestler of the Kokugikan, will enter Waseda University to study, as he believes his present knowledge is insufficient for him to fully comprehend the current times, says the Asahi.
Although Minanogawa has expressed his intention of retiring from the sumo ring several times, his good results in the Spring Tournament prove that he is still fit to defend his title for some time to come, says the Asahi. However, he has decided to study at Waseda University as he has found that his present knowledge is insufficient for him to fully comprehend the situation wherein the nation is placed.
Minanogawa is different from predecessors, Onishiki, who departed from the sumo ring for scholastic studies in 1927, or Kasagiyama, who is a graduate of Waseda University and at present active in the ring, because Minanogawa intends to attend Waseda while remaining in his present profession. Minanogawa will go to the university on Monday to present his application, to take the entrance examination.
"My motive?" said Minanogawa. "It isn't complicated or difficult at all. Twenty years have passed since I first stepped into the ring and ever since I have done my duty to the nation by enthusiastically devoting my life to sumo. However, old-fashioned sumo are out of place in the present age. That is, the times do not permit wrestlers to remain as they have been. Veteran wrestlers are being left behind by newcomers. It is very difficult for me to understand various things being said about the present situation and I cannot express my own opinions, as I have devoted myself to sumo. Therefore, I have decided to study some more.
" I don't think it's too late for me to study as I'm only about 40. If I'm permitted to enter the university, I'm going to study very hard, and I hope thereby to do my bit for the country after I retire from the ring. I'm always telling young wrestlers that they must study."
"It's a fine thing that Minanogawa wants to study at the university," said a member of the board of Waseda University. "We would like to fulfill his wishes. We will discuss the matter after having received his application, as the new school term begins in April."
