Sumo Ends Today
Maedayama Is Going Strong; Trio From Tatsunami Is Defeated
The spring main sumo tourney, which has been going
on since January 10, will wind up today, January 24, after drawing a record
crowd during its 15 day series.
Maedayama, "ozeki", of the eat team, who had already
triumphed over Futabayama and Haguroyama, captain and vice captain of the
East team respectively, defeated Nayoroiwa on the 14th day of the tourney,
January 23, thus making a clean sweep over the powerful Tatsunami trio.
Maedayama is the first grappler to achieve such
a feat as a complete victory over the formidable trio from the Tatsunami
club.
Futaba Vs. Aki
The bout between Futabayama and Akinoumi became a hectic
fight, as had been expected, and it required a play-off before the issue
was settled, resulting in the victory of Futabayama.
The umpire gave a decision in favor of Futabayama
in the first bout, but a protest was raised by Maedayama, so close was
the fight. The board of referees ruled, after a 10 minute discussion, that
the match was a tie. Thus a play-off was declared. Again it was a thrilling
battle, but Futabayama plainly won this time.
Minanogawa Downed
Minanogawa, captain of the East team, went down in defeat
before Haguroyama.
Futabayama and Haguroyama were tied for first place
in individual showings at the end of 14th day, with 13 wins and one defeat
each. The individual honors will go to one of the two, irrespective of
the performances on the final day.
The West outpointed the East 15 matches to 8 on
the 14th day, but the East still leads in the total score of 166 to 151.
