MAEDAYAMA SURPRISES SUMO FANS IN VICTORY

East Camp Champion Topples Futabayama in Annual Wrestling Tourney

Pandemonium broke loose in the Kokugikan Bowl at Ryogoku yesterday, the 13th day of the current 15-day "spring" professional wrestling tournament, when husky Maedayama, champion of the east camp, won a heated tussle from Grand Champion Futabayama, chief of the west camp who is rated as the strongest rikishi today.
The bout started with a fierce exchange of hand pushes. Maedayama even hitting his opponent in the face. The champion of the east camp succeeded first in taking hold of the loincloth of his opponent with both hands but the Grand Champion pushed his foe to the ringside. Maedayama seemed on the point of being pushed out of the ring when he executed a beautiful body throw, the Grand Champion toppling down below the ring.
Prior to his defeat, Futabayama was the only undefeated rikishi in the tournament, with a string of 12 victories behind him. Today he will be pitted against Akinoumi, champion of the east camp, and Friday against Grand Champion Minanogawa.
