New Structure Penetrates Sumo Circles
Admiral Isamu Takeshita, president of the Japan Sumo
Wrestling Association, addressed prominent representatives of the professional
sport yesterday afternoon at the association's headquarters preliminary
to the opening of the spring tournament today. The wrestlers lined up to
hear the plans for the new wrestling structure included all the leading
contenders and former champions, including Grand Champion Minanogawa, in
the center and the only one wearing shoes.
Ring Opening Ceremony Performed

The ancient ceremony of dohyo matsuri, or opening of
the ring before each professional sumo wrestling tournament, was performed
yesterday at the Kokugikan Amphitheater in Ryogoku. The ceremony was attended
by Admiral Isamu Takeshita, president of the Japan Sumo Wrestling Association
and other officers of the organization.

Wrestlers Prepare for Meet Opening

Japanese sumo wrestlers are busily working out in preparation
for the annual spring tournament which gets under way at the Kokugikan
Amphitheater today. The new ozeki ranking entrant, akinoumi, of the east
camp, is shown working out with the maegashira ranking Yamatoiwa, of the
same camp.
