TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR SUMO TOURNEY

Futabayama and Minanogawa Head Array of Wrestlers for Annual Spring Meet

The East side led by Grand Champion Futabayama and the West led by Grand Champion Minanogawa changed sides  in the new list of professional rikishi (Japanese wrestlers) which was announced yesterday morning, prior to the January 10 opening of the spring tournament.
The change of sides took place because of the defeat of the East in the tournament last summer in Tokyo by a wide margin of 202 to 141 points.
The new east side, led by Minanogawa, has three ozeki of wrestlers ranking next to the Grand Champion who are Akinoumi, Itsutsushima and Mayedayama. Akinoumi, who scored the largest number of individual victories in the last tournament, is the regular Ozeki, the other two are voted as extraordinary Ozeki.
Haguroyama, the best disciple of Futabayama, the Grand Champion of the new West side, still remains in the Ozeki rank. Futabayama himself, whose record in the last tournament was quite unworthy of a Grand Champion, is expected to stage a spectacular comeback in the coming tournament. He is said to have recovered his confidence, having made a good showing at the Meiji Shrine tournament and during provincial tours. It will be remembered that last summer he underwent a Spartan spiritual training at a temple in Kyushu.
Minanogawa, the giant leader of the new East side, is said by Domei to be training now with a furious zeal in preparation for the coming tourney.
Terukuni and Hishuzan, who scored good marks in the last tourney, are the Sekiwake, or wrestlers ranking next to Ozeki, of the new West and East sides respectively.
