WEST SIDE WINS SUMO TOURNEY
Defeats East BY 202-141 Score; Akinoumi Takes Individual Honor Crown
Tokyo, Friday, May 24, 1940

    The West side beat the East side by 62 bouts, scoring 202 wins to the West's 151 during the 15 day summer sumo tournament which closed Thursday night. Although the latter days of the tourney were comparatively uninteresting due to the absence of Futabayama, Haguroyama and Tamanoumi, three most high ranking wrestlers of the East, it drew, a packed crowd daily all through the 15 days.
    By defeating Matsuragata by shoving him out of the ring, Akinoumi, Sekiwake of the West side Thursday won the individual championship honors. His record was 14 victories and only one defeat at the hands of Tatekabuto on the sixth day. The runner-up to him was Itsutsushima, who registered two defeats, having been beaten Thursday by Aobayama unexpectedly.
    Minanogawa, Grand Champion of the West side, was beaten Thursday by Nayoroiwa, Sekiwake, for his fifth defeat. Terukuni, Sekiwake of the East side, defeated, Mayedayama, Champion, after a furious tussle.
    The results of the main bouts Thursday were as follows:

Akinoumi defeated Matsuragata
