WEST SEKIWAKE WIN AGAIN
Akinoumi, Itsutsushima, Defeat Their Opponents In Summer Sumo Tourney
Tokyo, Thursday, May 23, 1940

Akinoumi and Itsutsushima, both Sekiwake of the West side who have been beaten only once in the current tourney were victorious over Nayoroiwa and Terukuni, Sekiwake of the East side, respectively, Wednesday, the 14th day of the 15-day summer sumo tournament at the Kokugikan bowl.
As the bout started, Akinoumi gripped his opponent's loincloth with his left hand and pushed him to the ringside. Nayoroiwa also took hold of Akinoumi's loincloth and attempted a body throw, which was dodged adroitly by his opponent. Akinoumi then executed a neat body throw for victory.
Itsutsushima beat Terukuni easily by pushing his opponent down during an exchange of hand pushes. Terukuni, the best wrestler now in the East side in the absence of Futabayama and Haguroyama, had been expected to stage a more vigorous tussle with Itsutsushima.
A most heated match took place between Sakuranishiki of the West and Asahikawa of the East. After exchanging hand and body attacks, the two clinched in the center of the ring and the umpire ordered an intermission in the prolonged bout. When the bout resumed, Sakuranishiki pushed Asahikawa out of the ring by sheer strength.
The results of the main bouts Wednesday were as follows:
Saganohana defeated Hishuzan
Dewaminato defeated Aobayama
Ayawaka defeated Oshio
Kasagiyama defeated Banjaku
Ayanobori defeated Tsurugamine
Itsutsushima defeated Terukuni
Akinoumi defeated Nayoroiwa
Mayedayama defeated Futasegawa
Minanogawa defeated Tomoyegata
