AKINOUMI BEATS TERUKUNI IN 13TH SUMO BOUT
30,000 Fans Pack Kokugikan Despite Absence of Futaba; 2 Are Defeated Only Once
Tokyo, Wednesday, May 22, 1940

    Although Futabayama, Grand ,Champion of the East side, was absent from the ring, another capacity crowd of about 30,000 rabid fans packed the Kokugikan bowl Tuesday, the 13th day of the 15-day summer sumo tourney.
    In the day's most sensational bout, between Akinoumi and Terukuni, Sekiwake of the West and East sides, Akinoumi won after pushing his opponent from the ring following a grappling contest.
    Itsutsushima of the West side, who had been defeated only once until Monday, beat Nayoroiwa, Sekiwake of the East side quite simply, before his opponent could attempt any counter-attack.
    Akinoumi and Itsutsushima remain now the only two wrestlers who were beaten only once thus far in the present tourney. The high-ranking sumo of the East side won 10 victories against 11 of the West side. In the total, the West leads the East by 172 to 127.
