GRAND CHAMP FAILS TO APPEAR
Futabayama Defaults Monday Bout; Withdraws From Tourney After 4 Defeats
Tokyo, Tuesday, May 21, 1940

    Futabayama, Grand Champion of the East side, who was defeated Sunday for the fourth time in the is present summer sumo tourney, failed Monday to appear for his bout with Ayanobori to the great disappointment of the spectators who packed the Kokugikan bowl.
    He will be absent for the rest of the tournament because, he said, four defeats in one tourney are unworthy of the rank of Grand Champion. Even his retirement from from wrestling was rumored on Monday but his teacher Tatsunami and the Sumo Association denied it emphatically, saying that his decline but temporary.
    Minanogawa, Grand Champion of the West side, was beaten for the fourth time in the tourney the same day by Saganohana, who was aggressive throughout the bout and who had apparently no difficulty in pushing his giant opponent out of the ring.
    With its Grand Champion and Champion Haguroyama absent from its lineup, side was low, registering only eight victories against 15 of the West.
    The results of the principal bouts Monday were as follows:
Ryogoku defeated Fujigatake
Banjaku defeated Hishuzan
Dewaminato defeated Katsuragawa
Terukuni defeated Kasagiyama
Itsutsushima defeated Oshio
Mayedayama defeated Nayoroiwa
Saganohana defeated Minanogawa
    Akinoumi and Ayanobori, who had been scheduled to wrestle with Haguroyama and Futabayama, registered each a victory by the absence of their opponents.
