Futabayama Absent

Toppled By Itsutsushima

Futabayama, "yokozuna" and captain of the East team, on May 20 asked the Japan Professional Sumo Association for permission to absent himself from the remaining matches in the current tourney. The petition was sanctioned.
Explaining the reason, Futabayama said that he has lost confidence in himself as "yokozuna", having been defeated in four matches up to the 11th day.
Declaring that he would soon be able to fight with confidence, Futabayama said that he would not leave the ring.
On the 11th day of the tourney, May 19, Futabayama was beaten by Itsutsushima, "sekiwake".
Haguroyama, "ozeki" also of the East group, was absent from the tourney, due to illness.
