UPSETS FEATURE SUMO MATCHES
Haguroyama, Champion Of East Side, Defeated In 9th Day of Tourney
Tokyo, Saturday, May 18, 1940

Haguroyama, Champion of the East side, was defeated by Ryuozan and Hishuzan, of the West side, by Asahikawa in two upsets Friday, the ninth day of the 15-day summer sumo tournament at the Kokugikan bowl.
Ryuozan and Haguroyama grappled tightly, each attempting to throw his opponent down. Haguroyama, who is suffering from an injury in his right foot, was finally pushed down out of the ring.
Clever Asahikawa beat Hishuzan, who had suffered only one defeat until the eight day, by sidestepping the opponent's initial attempt to take hold of his loincloth and then counterattacking him with a body push.
Another clever sumo, Ayanobori of the West side, failed to defeat Nayoroiwa. Despite his adroit foot attacks, Ayanobori could not stem the fierce body attack of Nayoroiwa and was pushed out of the ring. This bout was watched with keen interest because the two wrestlers fought close matches in two previous tournaments.
Futabayama and Minanogawa, Grand Champions of the East and West sides, defeated Dewaminato and Banjaku without much difficulty. Tamanoumi, of fourth rank in the East side, who has been ill and who had won only one victory until Thursday, was absent from the tourney Friday.
The results of the main bouts Friday were as follows:
Jintozan defeated Shachinosato
Ryogoku defeated Tsurugamine
Asahikawa defeated Hishuzan
Kasagiyama defeated Fujigatake
Itsutsushima defeated Kaneminato
Terukuni defeated Kashimanada
