SUMO FANS GET BIG SURPRISES
Grand Champ Minanogawa And Maedayama Go Down During 4th Day Tourney
Tokyo, Monday, May 13, 1940

Two big surprises marked the fourth day of the summer Sumo championship tournament at the Kokugikan on Sunday. Minanogawa and Maedayama, grand champion, and "ohzeki" or second ranking champion, respectively, of the West side went down.
Minanogawa was matched against Tatekabuto, of the "maegashira," or the fourth rank from the grand champion, of the East side. The champion was subject to fierce hand pushes from the first, but resisted them successfully at first. In a few moments, however, the Tatekabuto's terrific pushes proved too powerful, the champion was shoved out of the ring.
Maedayama wrestled with Aobayama, "maegashira" of the East side. The former was expected to be the winner, but the determined pushes of the latter proved effective. Although the aggressor was at a time in danger of being lifted out of the ring, his arms proved strong enough to bring down Maedayama, was overwhelmed by the strong power in Aobayama's arms, his three days' winning streak coming to an end.
Grand Champion Futabayama showed little trouble in defeating his opponent Yamatonishiki. Favored by a fine Sunday the Sumo place, was literally filled up with spectators.
