SUMO FANS WILD AS FUTABAYAMA UPSET IN BOUT
Kashimanada in Tears After Win; Minanogawa Also Suffers Same Fate
Tokyo, Saturday, May 11, 1940

Pandemonium broke loose at the Kokugikan Bowl Friday, the second day of the summer sumo tournament, when Grand Champion Futabayama, captain of the East side, met defeat at the hands of Kashimanada 13th ranker on the West side. Another unexpected upset the same day was that of Minanogawa, grand Champion of the West side, who was beaten by the veteran Onami.
In the main event of the day, Kashimanada dashed furiously at Futabayama, pushing him a few steps toward the edge of the ring. Defending, Futabayama attempted to throw his opponent with hit right hand gripping Kashimanada's loincloth. Kashimanada tottered but rallied and, seeing his opponent still unsteady, pushed him out of the ring with a mighty shove from behind.
Kashimanada was more aggressive than Futabayama throughout the tussle. After the bout, he revealed that he had made plans to resort to a pushing attack and evade Futabayama's gripping, for this would have meant certain defeat. At the tremendous success of his strategy, Kashimanada was almost in tears as he left the ring.
The veteran Onami clinched an easy victory over Grand Champion Minanogawa. Both attacked each other with hand pushes at the start. Sidestepping an attempt by Minanogawa, Onami succeeded in dashing his body against Minanogawa pushing the grand champion out of the ring.
