SUMO WRESTLERS START TOURNAMENT TRAINING

Young Hopefuls Get In Much Practice and Then Attend Retirement Ceremony

Young hopefuls of the eastern camp of sumo wrestlers began intensive training yesterday for the summer matches, which will get under way in the Kokugikan Amphitheater in about a week.
The training arenas were filled with practice matches as the young athletes dashed from one to the other in the hope of getting in as much practice as possible.
Tamanoumi supervised the practice matches beginning at 5 o'clock in the morning. Terukuni, Haguroyama and other veterans of the eastern camp arrived about 10 o'clock to make final arrangements for their training schedules and to discuss sumo technique. After practicing and testing their strength against each other to the satisfaction of the trainers, they left in the early afternoon to attend the ceremony of the retirement from active competition of Musashiyama at the Yasukuni Shrine sumo arena.
The ceremony war held under the supervision of Dewanoumi in the presence of a large number of fans and friends of the retiring champion, who had held championship rank since 1936. Cause of his retirement is reported to be a bad right shoulder, which has handicapped him for some time.
