Sumo Symbol Clipped Away

Saburo Matsui, better known as Wakashima, who held the Maegashira or third rank in the list of Japanese wrestlers, loses his profession as the symbol of the sumo star is clipped away by Admiral Kichisaburo Nomura, former Foreign Minister, in a ceremony held yesterday afternoon in the Korakuen stadium. The function was attended by Admiral Isamu Takeshita, president of the Japan Sumo Association, Admiral Ryokitsu Arima and others interested in wrestling. After 18 years in the ring, Wakashima is retiring before the opening of the summer wrestling season on Friday of next week. Many sumo matches were held in honor of the retiring star.

CHAMP HOPES TO WRESTLE
But Fans Worried Over  Cough and Painful Chest of Futabayama

Futabayama, reigning sumo (Japanese wrestling) king, hopes to wrestle in the annual summer tournament here this month, despite a bad cough and a severe pain in his chest and side, according to the Asahi. Futaba's trouble developed suddenly at Mito while he was on tour last month, and he was unable to appear at the sumo matches at the recent Yasukuni Shrine Festival.
The champ himself says he shunned the festival because of the proximity of the coming May tournament and doctors are said to be unable to find anything seriously wrong with him. But since returning to his home in Tsukuji, he has developed a cough and the pain in his side seems to get no better, despite constant rest and sun-lamp treatments.
