GRAND CHAMPION MINANOGAWA WINS

The camera caught Grand Champion Minanogawa as he crushed Kaneminato for victory in Friday's bouts of the sumo tourney at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku.

BANJAKU TOPS MAYEDAYAMA FOR BIG UPSET

Banjaku, he of the great protruding belly, stole the show Friday in the ninth day's bouts of the 15-day "Spring" professional sumo tournament at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, by registering an upsetting victory over Champion Mayedayama of the West side. It was Mayedayama's second defeat in the tourney.
As a matter of fact, it was a bad day for the West side. Stalwarts Sagamigawa, Kasagiyama, Ryuozan, Kashimanada, Jintozan, Hishuzan and Sakuranishiki, who were favored to win, all fell by the way side. The result was that the day's score found the East side clinching 14 victories as against eight by the West side, which put the total 105 to 102 in favor of the East side for the nine days.
No sooner had they stood up than Mayedayama thrust his left arm through Banjaku's defense for a hold on the latter's grip and had the advantage. But Banjaku through sheer strength stuck his own left through Mayedayama's defense for an equal hold on the girdle. Mayedayama resorted to an arm throw and Banjaku's heavy body almost sailed through the air but the bid for victory was checked. Then it was Banjaku who countered with an arm throw and down went Mayedayama's body.
The day's most thrilling match was that between Champion Haguroyama and Dewaminato. A body throw after furious sallies finally won for Haguroyama.
Grand Champion Futabayama hung up his ninth consecutive victory without a setback by lifting Matsunosato high into the air with his Herculean strength and deposited him lightly outside the ring. He remains the only undefeated wrestler in the top ranking circle.
The bout between Grand Champion Minanogawa and Kaneminato was a funny sight, Minanogawa more than 6 ft. in height, weighs more than 300 pounds, while Kaneminato is scarcely over 5 ft. in height and tips the scales at about 150 pounds. Kaneminato's cleverness proved of no avail and Minanogawa just about crushed him outside the ring.
