A BEAUTIFUL THROW

Ryuozan's strategy was to rush at Grand Champion Futabayama right on the first “shikiri” or process of getting started to catch his opponent off guard (this is seldom, there usually being about 10 false starts), but Futabayama, unperturbed, took him on and threw him with an arm throw. Photo shows Futabayama at the right just after he had thrown Ryuozan.

FUTABAYAMA SHOWS INVINCIBILITY IN SUMO TOURNEY AT RYOGOKU

Grand Champion Futabayama continues to amaze close followers of sumo, Japanese style wrestling and the nation's indigenous sport, with his seemingly unlimited strength. Being the captain of the East side, all wrestlers lined upon the West side are forever planning strategy to beat him. Ryuozan tried something new but he was no match for Futabayama in the eighth day's bouts Thursday of the current 15-day “Spring” tournament at the Kokugikan bowl in Ryogoku. Futabayama along remains undefeated of some 48 wrestlers in the top ranking circle.
Ten minutes are allowed for the “shikiri” or process of starting a bout. In other words, it is entirely up to the two contestants to get started during this 10-minute period. In the old days there was no time limit and it is said that some of the temperamental wrestlers took as much as an hour in rushing at each other, and this gradually killed interest in the sport. There must be a free will on each side to fight it out and as many false starts as possible within the time limit are permissible. Nine cases out of ten the contestants require the full time allowed. Futabayama has had the reputation of being always ready to start at any time his opponent rushes at him. He is never temperamental in this respect.

RYOUZAN'S STRATEGY

Ryuozan had something up his sleeve Thursday. It is probable that he had thought about it all night Wednesday. He rushed at Futabayama on the first of what is usually a series of false starts, hoping to catch Futabayama off guard. The more than 20,000 fans almost went crazy with excitement when Futabayama, living up to his reputation despite having much to lose and could have easily demurred, stood up and received Ryuozan's charge. They immediately fell into a clinch, grasping each other's girdle with their right hands. Before Ryuozan even had a chance to take a breath, Futabayama resorted to an arm throw and Ryuozan's body sailed through the air. this bout was the first to start on the first try in the current tourney, and for several years at that.
Terukuni, 21-year-old wrestler, continued his brilliant record by lifting the more experienced Ayanobori into the air and depositing his outside of the ring for a convincing victory.
Asahigawa registered a surprise by outwitting the strong Akinoumi of the West side. Akinoumi's spirited charge forced Asahigawa to the edge of the ring where he suddenly pulled Akinoumi to the side and out went the latter's body. Once again the favorite had been beaten

NAYOROIWA BEATEN

The only other upset of the day was burly Kashimanada's victory over Nayoroiwa, stable mate of Futabayama. Nayoroiwa was altogether too anxious to start the bout and when it did start, Kashimanada had the jump on him and forced him out of the ring, with a right-handed attack to the throat.
