Minanogawa Topples

Haguroyama Is Also Downed; ¥1,000 Donated For Shizuoka Relief

Favorites tumbled by the wayside on the sixth day of the main spring tourney of the Japan Professional Sumo Association on Tuesday, January 16, at the Kokugikan arena, Ryogoku, Tokyo.
"Yokozuna" Minanogawa suffered his first defeat in the six matches to date at the hands of the veteran Oshio.
"Ozeki" Haguroyama, one of the outstanding favorites, met his nemesis in the powerful Sagamigawa, one of the rising newcomers. With those two hitherto undefeated wrestlers going down, "Yokozuna" Futabayama remains the only sumotori with a clean record to date.
The Japan Professional Sumo Association also on Tuesday contributed ¥1,000 to the relief of victims of the disastrous Shizuoka fire which razed 7,000 houses the day before.

Other principal sumo results were as follows:
Futabayama defeated Ayawaka
Maedayama defeated Onami
Akinoumi defeated Saganohana
Ayanobori defeated Banjaku
Nayoroiwa defeated Komanosato
