Grand Champion Goes Through Rites
Grand champion (yokozuna) Minanogawa, leader of the
western camp in the current wrestling tournament, performed the traditional
rites for the opening of the semi-annual sumo contests yesterday morning
on the ring in the Kokugikan in Ryogoku. Also taking part in the ceremonies
was Futabayama, leader of the eastern camp. Minanogawa is shown here with
his assistants, while the referee watches in the background. The characters
on the grand champion's "apron" give the name of a wine - not sake - shop.
