Sumo Tournament Announced
The spring sumo tournament scheduled to begin today
was announced by criers, throughout the city yesterday, in accordance with
age-old custom. One group of criers is shown here with a drum on the Ryogoku
Bridge near the Kokugikan, the wrestling amphitheater. The 15-day wrestling
tournament will be opened with ancient ceremonies on the wrestling ring
this morning. Mr. Inosuke Shikimori, the chief referee, will officiate.
Among those expected to be present are Admiral Takeshita, retired, president
of the Japan Sumo Association, and its four managing directors.
