Ban On Boxing, Sumo Sustained By Committee

The sports committee of the Welfare Ministry at its general meeting Thursday sustained the recommendation made by its subcommittee to scratch boxing and professional sumo from the program of the Meiji Shrine games to be staged next Fall.
Decision was reached to hold games, comprised of 24 events, for five days with the chief attractions on November 3.
Boxing is considered as an important sport which has not yet been fully appreciated by the Japanese. And sumo by the professional wrestlers too tinged with professionalism to have no place in the amateur program.
