LONG TOURNEY DISFAVORED
Peers Feel 2-Day Extension of Sumo Matches Too Hard on Fans
Two members of the House of Peers, Count Tadamasa
Sakai and Dr. Yasushi Hijikata, on Wednesday expressed disapproval with
plans of the Dai-Nippon Sumo Association to extend the semi-annual Japanese
wrestling tournaments from 13 days to 15 days according to the Miyako.
Recalling that a period of eight days was adequate
for the sumo tournaments 160 years ago, the Diet members declared that
the additional two days will work too much of a hardship on the contestants
and the fans alike. An association spokesman, however, said that the two
extra days will benefit the fans, since many will get a chance to see the
games who otherwise would be turned away because of excess crowds.
