COMING SUMO TOURNAMENT TO BE EXTENDED BY 2 DAYS
Season's Lengthening to Require Raising of Rank of Many Wrestlers
The length of the summer sumo tourney will be extended
from the usual 13 days to 15 days this year, reports the Asahi. The Sumo
Wrestlers Association, most of whose members are now appearing in Osaka,
Sunday morning agreed to the suggestion of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association
to extend the length of the next wrestling session.
In order to fill out the enlarged program, however,
one difficulty must be solved. At present there is a scarcity of medium
ranking wrestlers. According to sumo tradition, no man fights the same
man twice during the summer meet, and so the number of wrestlers must be
increased. The association has promised to remedy this scarcity by raising
the rankings of the better of the low-ranking fighters, of whom there are
many.
No other raises in rank are expected, however. Tradition
fixes the number of high-ranking wrestlers, and most of the available top
spots are filled. For example, there are three grand champions, two of
whom participated in the spring tourney in January, and only four are permitted.
