Futabayama's Bride

    The engagement of Miss Sumiko Koshiba, 23, only daughter of a deceased Osaka money-lender, to Futabayama, 28-year-old, grand champion of Sumo (Japanese wrestling), has been announced by the prospective bride's uncle, Dr. Takeo Watase, Osaka Imperial University professor. The marriage is scheduled to take part on April 29, the birthday of the Emperor.

Bride-to-be Forsakes Heritage to Marry Grand Champion of Sumo Ring

    Before the semi-annual sumo tournament here last month, followers of the sport all wondered who would throw the great Futabayama, grand champion who had run up a string of 69 consecutive victories in the sumo ring. Before the tourney was half over, folks began to wonder who wouldn't toss Futaba.
    It developed over the week-end, however, that Futaba had been thrown for a loop long before the tourney began and it wasn't any of his fellow wrestlers, either. At was the little fellow popularly depicted with no clothes and a bow and arrow. It was kept a secret at the time, but Futaba had fallen for Miss Sumiko Koshiba, 23, Osaka heiress.
    Miss Koshiba's engagement to the sumo king was announced by her uncle, Dr. Takeo Watase, Osaka Imperial University Professor, and according to the Japanese newspapers, it came as something of a surprise to the public.
    Futabayama himself affirmed his intentions toward Miss Koshiba, when interviewed in Tokyo Saturday night, reports Domei. Miss Koshiba also is in Tokyo at present. it is said. The wedding is to take place on April 29, birthday of the Emperor.
    Miss Koshiba is the only daughter of an Osaka money-lender. Both of her parents are dead, but it is understood that they left her a home in Osaka and a considerable sum of money. These she will renounce, however, in order to marry, the sumo champ.
    Miss Koshiba is a graduate of Tennoji Girls' School in Osaka and also of the Shoin Girls' College, where she specialized in domestic science and home economics. According to popular belief, the future Mrs. Futabayama will find full use for her training to cope with a sumo champion's appetite.
    She is said to have first seen Futaba several years ago when she attended a sumo program with a friend.
