High Government Officials Attend Dedication Rite
Tokyo, Saturday, Feb. 4, 1939
The dedication ceremony of a warplane donated by
the Japan Sumo (Wrestling) Association to the Army took place at 2 p.m.
today at the Tachikawa Military Airfield.
The function was attended by the proxies of the
War, Navy and Communications Ministers, Inspector-General Eiki Tojo, of
Military Aviation and other high Government officials totaling 100 more
than 70 professional wrestlers and 2,700 others.
After the donated plane was "purified" with a Shinto
ritual, Grand Champion Futabayama read an address of dedication, attired
in the ornamental apron. This over the airplane was named Patriotic Plane
No. 303 "Sumo" by the proxy of the War Minister.
Grand Champions Futabayama and Minanogawa then performed
Dohyoiri or the ritual of the Grand Champion entering the ring to wish
good luck for the "Sumo" warplane.
The ceremony over, the plane took off with other
Army planes for a demonstration flight over the airdrome.
