Dewaminato won the honor of the champion in the January main sumo tourney, taking all his 13 matches. Although he was ranked second from the bottom in the "West" senior group, he was matched with such high ranked grapplers as Haguroyama, a "Komusubi" on the 10th day, Tamanoumi, another "Komusubi" on the 11th day, and Banjaku on the last day, but he emerged the victor in each bout to win the title in a clean sweep.
