Dewaminato Seizes Sumo Championship

Hishuzan Is Next In Order As Tokyo Tourney Is Ended

Marked by plenty of exciting  matches and many upsets, the January Main sumo tourney which has been going on since January 12 at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Tokyo, ended on January 24.
Dewaminato, a "Maegashira" ranked second from the lowest in the "West" senior group, won the honor of being the champion of the current tourney, making a clean sweep.
It is unprecedented that a grappler ranked as low as Dewaminato has won the championship. It is expected that his rank will be greatly elevated when new ranks are awarded.
Hishuzan chalked up the best record next to Dewaminato losing only one of the 13 matches, Minanogawa, the holder of the title of "Yokozuna", who ran in the trophy race with only one defeat until the 12th day, was defeated by Futabayama, another "Yokozuna" on the last day on Tuesday. Thus Minanogawa became third in the point-getting race in the senior group.

Futabayama Impresses

Futabayama, through he suffered four defeats, proved that he is still an A-1 grappler by scoring a brilliant victory over the strong Minanogawa.
The last day, in addition to several well-matched bouts, was featured by a grueling match staged between Tamanoumi and Haguroyama, both "Komusubi" in rank. As in the bout between Kagamiiwa and Banjaku on the 11th day, time was called by the umpire. The match, after the resumption was only a repetition of the exciting struggle. This match was finally declared a draw.

The results of the leading bouts on the last day included:
