DEWAMINATO HERO OF SUMO TOURNEY

Young 17th-Ranker Only Undefeated Contestant, Winning 13 Straight

Young Dewaminato, burly young 17th-ranking sumo wrestler who was noticed by no one on the opening day, emerged  definitely as the hero last night at the close of the 13-day winter wrestling tournament at the Kokugikan, Ryogoku, Honjo Ward.
When Dewaminato flung his 13th opponent, Banjaku (who earlier in the tournament had downed the mighty Futabayama) to the mat last night for his 13th consecutive victory, the crowd went wild. A sudden blizzard of seat cushions filled the auditorium and sake bottles sailed through the air as they had done on two other occasions last week when Futabayama bit the dust. Dewaminato strutted from the circular arena, the only one of the dozens who started to emerge without having felt the mat beneath his broad back.
In the match of the mighties, involving the only two grand champions who appeared in the tournament just ended, Futabayama strained himself to the utmost and finally flopped down his opponent. Minanogawa, after getting the worst of things in the first part of the match. Futabayama was nearly thrown off balance at one point, but he recovered and consigned his fellow grand champion to the mat amid cheers. It was the second defeat of the tourney for Minanogawa, who was bested by young Tamanoumi, another current favorite on Sunday.
