Minanogawa Downed

Futabayama Registers Win Over Kasagiyama

Minanogawa, a grand champion wrestler, who for six days did not suffer a defeat in the present sumo tourney in Tokyo, was thrown by Tamanoumi on the seventh day, January 18, causing a big sensation among the sumo fans.
Futabayama defeated Kasagiyama on the seventh day after suffering three successive defeats. The Osaka Mainichi cup offered to the winner of the Haguroyama vs. Ayanobori bout on the seventh day was taken by the former.
Among the ranking wrestlers, Dewaminato remains as the sole contender with an unbeaten record in the present tourney.

The hope of Futabayama, grappler holding the title of "Yokozuna", of winning 100 straight victories in the main Tokyo sumo tourneys, was blasted by Akinoumi, rising wrestler of the Dewanoumi club, on the fourth day of the current tourney on Sunday.
The defeat of Futabayama came in his 70th match, after he had won all his bouts since the seventh day of the spring (January) tourney of 1936. Futabayama's last defeat was that suffered from the late Tamanishiki.
The record of 69 straight victories chalked up by Futabayama will shine brilliantly in national sumo history, however.  There has never before been a grappler who has made a clean sweep even in three consecutive tourneys. Futabayama won five consecutive tourneys - May tourney of 1936 and the January and May tourneys of 1937 and 1938.

--------------

Futabayama went down in defeat again before Ryogoku, also from the Dewanoumi club, on the fifth day on Monday. He was beaten once again on the sixth day, Tuesday, by Kashimanada, another rising grappler on the roster of the Dewanoumi club.
