SUMO GAINING IN POPULARITY

Onikaze Defeats Wakatachi; Dewagatake Wins From Kotogaura

Despite the fact that three noted wrestlers were absent yesterday's wrestling, a large number of spectators was present at the Kokugikan in Ryogoku. With the end of the sumo tournament near at hand interest is growing and undefeated wrestlers are being challenged against stronger opponents.
Wakatsuki, the rising young sumotori, was downed by Onikaze in a spectacular match yesterday. Misugiiso was victor over Ayanishiki, while Fukuyanagi, the great favorite among fans, defeated Tachiyama. Kiyosegawa, who the previous day had overthrown Dewagatake was conquered by Hitachiiwa. After experiencing his third successive defeat, the giant sumotori, Dewagatake yesterday emerged victor over Kotogahara amidst great shouting and applause from the spectators.
Tochigiyama, the extra champion, won again yesterday against Asahibiki by pushing his contender out of the ring.
After the conclusion of their contests in Tokyo the wrestlers will tour the big cities of Japan holding matches at each of the places. In early May the wrestlers return again to the capital to hold their semi-annual tournament here.
No wrestling matches in foreign countries have been planned this year. The tour of the wrestlers to the Hawaiian Islands and the American coast about eight years ago proved to be very popular but financially the trip was a failure.
